A child’s immune system starts developing before birth and continues to develop during the first few years of life. Healthy development is important because delayed development may be harmful and may lead to weak immunity in toddlers. After birth, a baby’s immune system is suddenly exposed to many new germs in the environment. Because the immune system is still developing and has a very little immune memory, they are more vulnerable to infection during this stage.1
Many parents get worried about weak immunity in their toddlers, especially when they get cold, cough, stomach infection etc frequently. This may make them wonder how to boost toddler immunity? They look for natural immunity boosters for toddlers to prevent frequent illness in them.
Frequent illnesses during toddlerhood are often normal part of growing up. Also, exposure to common viruses help build children’s immunity. However, frequent infections which are also severe and relapsing would require further investigations to understand the root cause and management.
It is normal for toddlers to have 6-10 viral infections every year and these are more common in the winter season. This occurs because their immune system is still building and learning to identify and fight different infections. Hence parents should not always conclude that these infections are a result of weak immunity in toddlers.2
Most infections in toddlers are harmless and resolve on their own. However, certain warning signs may indicate that the immune system isn’t working as effectively as it should.
Although it’s common for toddlers to catch several infections, it is important to evaluate those infections which are severe, difficult to treat and take longer than expected to recover. Hence it is important to look out for infections that keep coming back and affect different body parts like ears, lungs, skin, or sinuses, or lead to complications like pneumonia. Such prolonged illness requires further evaluation.1
It is important to have a healthy immune system for normal growth and development. Poor weight gain or slow growth, feeding difficulties etc may require further medical evaluation to look for any underlying conditions. Poor growth along with recurrent infections, is an important clinical warning sign that parents should not overlook.3
Recurrent or difficult-to-treat fungal skin infections may suggest an underlying problem with the immune system.3
If a close family member has an immune related disorder then the chances of the child getting it are higher. Hence the doctors may recommend evaluation if the family history is positive as it is one of the strongest clues when assessing children with poor immunity.3
It’s important to remember that these signs do not automatically mean weak immunity in toddler is the cause. Many children with recurrent infections have completely normal immune systems. However, these features help doctors decide whether additional testing is appropriate.1
There are various ways to improve or strengthen immunity in toddlers. A few important things that may influence immunity include adequate sleep, physical activity and vaccines to ensure they are immunized from several illnesses. Apart from these, nutrition and gut health are two important factors which may influence immunity in toddlers.
Research shows that a healthy gut plays a key role in building a child’s immune system during these early years. These microbes help train their immune cells, ensuring they stay sharp enough to fight harmful germs and bacteria while staying calm around healthy foods and helpful bacteria.1 They also act as a shield against infections and prevent harmful substances from entering the bloodstream. Children with a more balanced gut tend to have better overall health, may fall sick less often, as their bodies are strong to fight infections.2 Hence it is important to support the toddler gut health early in life as it helps strengthen the immune defences in the toddler.
Early childhood is a crucial stage in life which is characterized by fast physical growth, brain development, strengthening of the immune system, and the formation of eating habits that can last a lifetime. It is important to include natural immunity boosters for toddlers like a variety of macronutrients and micronutrients for their growth and development, which may be difficult to get from regular meals alone.4,5
Recent research shows that young children often do not get enough of essential nutrients, especially iron, vitamin D, calcium, zinc, while also emphasizing the importance of vitamin C for toddler immunity which is very important during childhood. These deficiencies are common among children who are picky eaters, with irregular meal routines or those with diets with higher calories but low in nutrition often due to increased intakes of processed or refined foods.6,7,8 It is important to include immune building foods in 2-5-year-old like in zinc, selenium, vitamin A, vitamin D and vitamin C for toddler immunity.
Parents often worry about how to boost toddler immunity especially natural immunity boosters for toddlers. Fussy eating habits, refusal to try healthy foods, strong preferences, distractions during meal time and sensitivity to new tastes and preferences affect toddler nutrition. While this behavior is usually temporary, it can affect their interest in meals, which can make meeting their daily nutritional needs especially immune building foods in 2-5-year olds challenging. Hence, including nutritional drink for toddlers like Complan NutriGro (2-6 years) can help provide essential nutrients that may be lacking from their diet. It includes immune building foods required in 2-5-year-old like zinc, selenium and biotin, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin C for toddler immunity which helps support the body’s natural defence system during a child’s growing years. It also has dietary fibre (fructo-oligosaccharides) and probiotic Bifidobacterium lactis, which help support a healthy gut environment. A healthy gut plays an important role in digestion, nutrient absorption and overall wellbeing.9 Overall, a healthy diet with right amount micronutrients, adequate sleep, physical activity, timely immunizations are important for building immunity in toddlers.
